Provisional

Provisional: Having the nature of a temporary arrangement made to meet special circumstances and intended to last only as long as these circumstances last. (Oxford dictionary).
Opposing the historical mapmaking of cartography, Provisional is a temporary route drawn outside of the traditional grid. Working directly from maps, Christine Mackey traces the international borders of the Americas onto various lengths of scotch tape that are then applied to the gallery walls at random. By adopting the concept of the ‘rhizome’ as a process of de-territorialisation and de-stabilization, Mackey’s site-specific installation usurpes the norms of topology and cartography.
