FLAT OUT: Travel Movie
Darren Douglas Floyd
VideoJanuary 12 - 22, 2012
Darren Douglas Floyd’s work is a combination of 16mm film and digital effects. These visual effects undermine the sincerity of his narration, add a supernatural element, and give the viewer an opportunity to laugh or disbelieve.
Travel Movie is a series of 28 short films fueled by the solitude of a cross-country drive. As the artist’s public-self becomes eroded by the highway and the métier of 16mm filmmaking, his internal monologue emerges with some surprising results.
Travel Movie #2 (2010)
Floyd wakes up in a truck stop parking lot. Behind him, a supernova explodes and fades in the distance.
Travel Movie #11 (2010)
Floyd complains about his headache and the seeming stupidity of his ideas as Jesus ascends from the top of Devil’s Tower.
Travel Movie #12 (2010)
At a gas station in Chugwater, WY at closing time, Floyd contemplates the spiritual implications of his project.
