FLAT OUT: Slapp & Und wenn
Betty Boehm
VideoNovember 17 - December 3, 2011
Betty Boehm is interested in existential self-questioning and exploring the ambivalence of the human psyche. To do so she uses bizarre, tragicomical, erratic and abysmal encounters that play off of cinematic clichés.
In Slapp, a woman persistently slaps another woman, who apparently bears her fate without any reaction. On the contrary, she continually quickly grooms herself in order to receive the next slap. Is this raw violence or perhaps a game or ritual that is played out in silent agreement?
Und wenn uses fairytale imagery to comment on the absurd, animalistic behaviors of humans as well as to question notions of identity. A young, beautiful girl wanders around in a forest, innocently smelling at flowers and watching butterflies, until a bizarre bear with a woman’s face turns up and violently kicks her out of its territory, out of the woods, out of the frame.
