Chess with Duchamp, Readymade Art
Holly Crawford
Participatory ProjectThursday, October 27, 2011 | 6 - 8 pm
“…the metaphysical chess game called ‘art history’…”
—Adam Gopnik, New Yorker 6/27/11
“The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts, although making a visual design on the chess-board, express their beauty abstractly, like a poem…. I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists.”
— Marcel Duchamp
What’s your position? What do you want to be? Do you have a gambit?
We invite all comers to participate in, or observe, a game of chess with living chesspersons. People will move around the big board on the floor, in a timed game of no more than 20 minutes per game. Come in costume, if you wish! You may also participate from afar by texting the moves and following the game on twitter @acdirect. All participation will be documented.
Groups are welcome. Some props will be available, such as crowns and swords.
RSVP not later than October 13 to chess@earthlink.net.
Anyone wishing to produce this project elsewhere may do so following these guidelines:
- There may be no charge to participate in the event.
- Notify Holly Crawford about the event’s location and time beforehand at chess@earthlink.net.
- Forward documentation of the event to chess@earthlink.net.
