Avvolto
Claudia Sbrissa

Installation
April 4 - May 18, 2013

Claudia Sbrissa’s artistic practice is reflective of her feminist artistic identity and is suffused with a quality of romance and material transcendence in which its human traces convey her concern with the connection between image, material and space.

Her recent work utilizes cloth that she manipulates in various ways, transforming various materials to create new forms. Pliable and yielding, cloth can take many shapes facilitating extended significance and personal meaning. These broad possibilities of construction give cloth potential for communication.

In her site-specific installation Avvolto, Sbrissa explores the possibilities inherent in the fabric’s plasticity as a three-dimensional form through the gesture of wrapping various lengths of crocheted and dyed string, rope, wool, ribbon and twine around the space of the gallery. This act simultaneously reveals and conceals that which is beneath. On one hand wrapping visually accentuates basic form and structure. On the other hand, it works to mask the nature and function of the object or space in question. This recontextualizes the objects within a variety of corresponding associations, creating a space in which to rediscover our relationship to them.
