In Avatar, Joerg Auzinger grapples with notions of reality. His video installation plays with depictions of the home in order to call into question those things we have learned to take for granted. The infringement of technology in our lives have made it impossible to distinguish truth from fiction. Avatar is an attempt to display these conflicting constructs, juxtaposed into one environment.

As an artist, Auzinger grapples with the competition between images and exterior reality as well as individual vs. shared memories. His installations demonstrate feedback loops in historical and cultural memory constructions. The media of ‘film’ stands alongside the museum as a central repository of cultural identity.

Auzinger creates artwork grappling with the sociopolitical aspects of our technology-riddled communication society. Using interactive installations, photography, video and film, the artist analyses the functions of both new and old media, their construction of reality and the resulting alteration of our definition of reality. Auzinger’s work represents media art with an incisive visual language based upon comprehensive theoretical examination and debate. His interactive installations often incorporate the viewer actively into the work and can be seen at international exhibits together with his photography.

About the Artist
Joerg Auzinger was born in 1972 in Linz, Austria. He attended the Department of Audiovisual Media at the Arts and Crafts College in Graz. He studied Visual Media Arts with Peter Weibel at the Vienna University of Applied Arts and film direction at the University for Music and Interpretative Art.
