We live in a world where our images and experiences are recorded on a daily basis: where we no longer have to rely on just our memories to recall events. We are able to relive moments in perfect clarity over and over again. This capability alters how we see and deal with emotion, like joy and trauma. Memories help us with traumatic events by slowly altering them over time, whereas video does not provide this luxury because it remains stagnant.
This multifaceted exhibition will allow viewers to actively experience memory through surveillance. The room will be reconfigured so that the physical scars and history will eventually be revealed. The installation will showcase abstract “surveillance paintings” that will work in correlation with a concealed camera in the space. As the viewer looks at the painting, their live image is sent to a monitor in another location.
Biography
Sean Donovan (b. 1987) is a New York-based artist whose work addresses dialogue between spaces and time through acts of architectural destruction and spatial manipulation. Donovan received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2016. His work has been shown at Open House Gallery in Chicago, Illinois; Pellegrini Gallery in Montecastello, Italy and Maryland Art Place in Baltimore, Maryland.
Donovan will present a group of his “surveillance paintings” at the SPRING/BREAK Art Fair in 2017.
