Intimate Immensity and Other Daydreams

November 28 – December 28, 2018

Opening Reception: Friday, November 30 | 6-8 pm

Jo Ann Walters, Phoenix, Arizona, 1989

AC Institute is thrilled to announce an upcoming group exhibit Intimate Immensity and Other Daydreams, featuring works by Jimbo Blachly, Kathline Carr, Peter Dudek, Alyssa Fanning, Brece Honeycutt, Rebecca Norris Webb, Jim Peters, Christine Sciulli, Monika Sosnowski, Alec Soth, Emma Tapley, and Jo Ann Walters.

Intimate Immensity and Other Daydreams is one in a series of projects drawing inspiration from the concept of the poetic imagination developed by the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. In particular, the exhibit will focus on how the poetic imagination, shaped by language, memory, but also daydreams, affects our perception and experience of being in a particular space and time. What is intimate and what is immense gets considered both formally and as metaphor. Whether outdoors encountering a landscape or indoors contemplating the inner landscape, Intimate Immensity and Other Daydreams will explore the possibilities of what is the poetic image and how it manifests itself for the artist, in the artwork, and for the viewer.

The exhibit will present mix-media work including drawing, photography, sculpture, and video by a variety of artists. Weekly events will be held during the duration of the exhibit including readings and other presentations.

Responding to the Poetic Image: A Panel Conversation on making art with artists Peter Dudek, Alyssa Fanning, Emma Tapley, Jo Ann Walters, and Rebecca Norris Webb

Wednesday, December 19th, 2018 | 6 – 8 pm

On Wednesday, December 19th, 6:00 – 8:00 pm in conjunction with the Intimate Immensity and Other Daydreams group exhibition on view at AC Institute November 28th – January 5th, sculptor Peter Dudek, painter Alyssa Fanning, painter Emma Tapley, photographer Jo Ann Walters, as well as the poet and photographer, Rebecca Norris Webb will discuss their work. Putting aside matters such as art theories and techniques or styles, what is the experience of making art? What do artists respond to which spurs the imagination and initiates the creative process? With a nod to Gaston Bachelard’s philosophical explorations about the poetic image we will look into the role daydreams play for artists of all disciplines.

The evening will start with a short reading by Rebecca Norris Webb of her prose poetry.

Moderated by Intimate Immensity and Other Daydreams curator and artist Monika Sosnowski.

This event is free and open to the public but seating is limited and pre-registration required.
